Mobile workstations come in various shapes and sizes. We recently reviewed the HP ZBook Fury 15 G7, which is a powerful mobile workstation with ISV-certified drivers that can replace many desktops but is more portable. Many engineers need the performance and reliability of a ZBook Fury 15 G7-sized device to run the latest 3D modeling applications, not to mention content creators who need all the features needed for video editing. It also has certain portability.
However, many other people in the same organization may need the same ISV-certified controllers that have higher portability and lower performance to perform critical business tasks anytime, anywhere. For these people, there is HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8. ZBook Firefly has all the special certifications and drivers that these users need, but they are packaged into a lightweight 14-inch laptop with many of the same features that we like Fury. Let’s take a moment to look at the HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8, and then dig deeper…
Specifications and features
HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is powered by the Intel Core i71185G7 processor. This Tiger Lake The processor has four cores and eight threads, with hyper-threading capabilities. Its 28 W TDP can provide maximum overclocking up to 4.8 GHz. We saw this processor last time in the MSI Prestige EVO 14. This laptop was the fastest ultraportable laptop we tested at the time. Should fly
In terms of graphics, HP provided our test equipment with NVIDIA Quadro T500 GPU. This GPU has 896 CUDA cores and 4 GB 64-bit GDDR5, clocked at 10GT/s, Turing-based TU117 GPU, and the closest consumer-level comparison is the MX450. NVIDIA designed this GPU to create lightweight CAD or content using ISV-certified drivers, not games, but it should provide lightweight 3D entertainment. The
CPU supports up to 32 GB of DDR43200 memory, although everything is soldered to the motherboard. Buyers should get what they think they need at the time of purchase. However, this does not apply to the M.2 2280 NVMe SSD built into the system. Thanks to the standard oil pan shape, it can be upgraded or replaced later if necessary. The Intel Wi-Fi 6802.11ax controller with integrated Bluetooth 5.
Is responsible for the network connection. The appearance of the ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is hand-made with an exquisite aluminum casing. It has a slightly darker finish, looks great, attracts attention, and is not flashy. The big Z logo on the lid is very smooth and can reflect light in different ways from different angles.
Its 108 square inches is the same size as MSI’s 14″ laptop, but larger than a 13.3″ laptop such as the Dell XPS 13 2in1. For those looking for a larger screen, HP has a 15-inch ZBook Firefly G8 with almost the same specifications. The
ZBook has a wide hinge that prevents the laptop from fully opening 180 degrees, but will come close. Unlike other newer laptops, the hinges and edges of the lid do not lift the laptop off the desktop or table, so the keyboard platform is very flat regardless of the viewing angle. However, the contents of this lid are still worth seeing.
HP has installed a DreamColor monitor in our Firefly test device. The DreamColor panel is only available for 14-inch models and has been calibrated at the factory to cover 100% of the DCIP3 color space. The maximum brightness is 500 nits, which makes it easy to read even in weak light conditions, and the viewing angle has also been increased. Very far. There is no noticeable color change from side to side, but like most laptop panels, it fades at more extreme angles. From the perspective of OLED screens, HP DreamColor is one of the best examples of IPS LCD screens we see in notebooks of this form factor.
Above this screen is a built-in 720p webcam with an infrared sensor for biometric authentication of Windows Hello. HP includes a privacy screen, which can be seen in the photo above as it is turned off. This is just a small slider that covers the camera, but be careful: closing the shutter will not disable the camera or its microphone. As for the microphone, HP has built-in a pair of noise-reducing microphones on both sides of the camera, which is very suitable for isolating the outside world during the Skype test call. The
Stereo speakers developed by Bang and Olufsen are located on the side of the keyboard. Like most portable speakers, they seem to gradually weaken in the low-frequency range, but perform well in the mid to high-frequency range. The conference call is easy to understand and very loud. This is great for watching YouTube videos quickly, but may not be the best choice for watching movies. Generally speaking, the sound solution for a notebook of this size is quite standard.
