Facebook Inc. said on Thursday that it has changed its name to Meta, marking the company’s first big rebranding.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the name change at the Facebook Connect conference, which underscores the company’s expanding goals beyond social media. The company’s ambition for developing a “metaverse” that combines online social encounters with the physical world was put out in an accompanying news release.
The annual Facebook Connect event brings together virtual reality developers, content providers, and marketers. The metaverse concept, which has grown in popularity thanks to blockchain technology, is a big part of this year’s event.
